Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is a sequel to one of the best movies in Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) that is unfortunately not as good as the first one.

First Guardians of the Galaxy was a big risk for Marvel. It was a movie about unknown superheroes that looked like a mish-mash of a superhero movie, comedy, and Star Wars. From the trailers, it looked kinda silly and stupid but not in a good way. After the release it was clear that Marvel can do and sell anything – the movie was a big box office hit and received very good reviews.

In my humble opinion, it is a very good movie (with Winter Soldier best MCU movie), a fun, playful and colorful comic book movie that is not ashamed of its origins with excellent visuals and soundtrack, solid story and jokes and very good action scenes and performances from all the actors.

Three years later we received a sequel that is unfortunately not on the same level – I was actually pretty disappointed with Vol. 2.

Where to start? The main problems are story and villains ( I found them weak and uninteresting) and that a lot of things in the movie leaves an impression like they tried too much, but it just didn’t feel natural. For example jokes. In Vol 1, they were mostly really good and funny, and here they are just trying to cram as many jokes as possible (I didn’t find Drax jokes regarding Mantis that funny). The same goes for the music – solid, but it wasn’t as good or memorable as in Vol 1. Action scenes were mostly forgettable; a CGI orgy fest in which our heroes are battling some generic enemies. If they paid more attention to the story and villains, the result would be much better.

Look, it is not a bad movie. I still liked these characters, actors did a good job, visually movie looked really good, there are a couple of funny scenes, and on the whole, the movie is watchable.  Just don’t expect too much.
