Mank Trailer: David Fincher’s And Netflix’s Latest Is Getting Early Oscar Buzz

After bringing us a teaser trailer two weeks ago, Netflix finally released the first official trailer for David Fincher’s (Se7en, Fight Club, The Social Network) latest movie, called Mank which is already receiving an early Oscar buzz. Mank is set in the late 1930s and early 1940s and follows screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz (Gary Oldman) during the development of Citizen Kane (1941) and problems he had with the director Orson Welles over the screenplay. Starring Gary Oldman, Amanda Seyfried, Lily Collins, Arliss Howard, Tom Pelphrey, and Charles Dance Mank will have a limited theatrical release in November 2020 before coming on Netflix on December 4, 2020.
Six years have passed since Fincher’s latest film Gone Girl (if we don’t count a couple of episodes of Mindhunter) and it was time he got back into the director’s chair. After all, with movies like Se7en, The Social Network, Fight Club, The Game, and Zodiac, Fincher is one of the best directors working in Hollywood in the last 30 years.
Based on a script written by his father Jack back in the 1990s, Fincher wanted to make this movie after finishing The Game (1997) but it didn’t happen at the time because the studio wouldn’t agree with Fincher to shoot the film in black and white. Mank will be the third biopic for Fincher (following Zodiac and The Social Network) and his fifth collaboration with composers Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails) and Atticus Ross.
