Nocturnal Animals, a second movie from designer Tom Ford (A Single Man), tells a story about art gallery owner, unhappily married woman played by Amy Adams (Arrival, American Hustle, Man of Steel). One day she receives a book from her first husband (Jake Gyllenhaal), a writer that she divorced 15 or 20 years ago. Now he wrote a book (called “Nocturnal Animals“) inspired by her. So she starts reading a book remembering their relationship.
Nocturnal Animals is actually a „story inside a story“ – one is centered around Susan, Amy Adams character and second story is her representation of the book. In the hands of some other director this could easily end up as an incoherent mess of a movie but thank God, that is not a case here. Nocturnal Animals actually works pretty well. I didn’t watch Ford’s first movie so I didn’t know what to expect but I was pleasantly surprised with his second directorial effort.
He did a really good job here, the story is interesting, the script is solid, performances from all actors are very good, especially Shannon and almost unrecognizable Taylor-Johnson (Kick-Ass), and visually movie looks pretty good and rich.
Nocturnal Animals is a very good, stylish, thrilling and interesting thriller that’s different than most movies coming out today. And for me, it is one of the best movies I watched this year.
