The Disaster Artist, biographical drama/comedy directed by James Franco, is a movie about making one of the worst movies in the history, The Room, and it’s author Tommy Wiseau. It is based on a Greg Sestero and Tom Bissell’s non-fiction book of the same name.

At the end of the 1990s, actor Greg Sestero (Dave Franco) meets the strange and eccentric Tommy Wiseau (James Franco) in an acting class. Tommy helps Greg to overcome his nervousness in acting and they became friends so Tommy convinces Greg to come to Los Angeles with him to pursue their dreams. After they are constantly rejected, Tommy decides to make his own movie, The Room. What follows is a bizarre struggle to create that film, guided by Tommy, a man who has plenty of money, but no filmmaking education, experience or talent.

I didn’t watch Tommy Wiseau’s The Room, but I saw plenty of clips which convinced me to skip it. Additionally I’m not a fan of James Franco (or his brother) so, despite positive reviews, I didn’t expect too much from The Disaster Artist but in the end, I was very satisfied with final results.

Tommy Wiseau is a talentless, excentric ego-tripper and a mystery. Nobody knows where he’s from (although he says he’s from New Orleans), nobody knows how old is he or where did he get money to make his movie. There are some speculations that he was born in Polland in 1955. and there are a lot of theories where his money came from. The Room was met with horrible reviews upon its release calling it one of the worst movie ever made but gained cult status during the years.

And I’m glad to say that Franco’s The Disaster Artist is opposite of that – it is an entertaining, interesting and pretty funny drama/comedy with very good performances from all cast members. Especially Franco brothers who are, I can’t believe I’m going to say this :), excellent as Tommy Wiseau and Greg Sestero, especially James Franco. As I already said, I’m not a fan of James Franco but he’s excellent here – there wasn’t a moment where I thought I’m watching James Franco and I think he deserved some awards recognition for his work here. James Franco treats Wiseau with care so we can connect with him and sympathize him although he’s strange, talentless ego-tripper.

Although the movie is pretty funny, Franco didn’t make a movie that makes fun of Wiseau and his The Room. It is a movie about the friendship between Tommy and Greg, their passion and pursuit of their dreams. One of the best movies of 2017.
