Russell Crowe’s Road Rage Thriller ‘Unhinged’ – First New Film To Open This Summer

Russell Crowe’s road rage thriller Unhinged is the first movie to be released this summer when theaters finally reopen.

As you all know cinemas around the world were shut down due to Coronavius (COVID-19) outbreak. Many movies were postponed and many ongoing productions were put on hold. As things start to normalize slowly, theaters will start opening their doors this summer. The first new film to open in America’s movie theaters will be Russell Crowe’s road rage thriller Unhinged.

Distributed by newcomer Solstice Studios, Unhinged is a psychological thriller about a young mother who will experience a new level of road rage. As she is running late getting to work, Rachel will have an encounter at a traffic light with the wrong guy (Russell Crowe) at the wrong time. What follows is a tense game of cat and mouse.

COVID-19 outbreak caused a lot of reshuffling. Unhinged was initially planned for September release but when A Quiet Place 2 moved out of its original slot and landed on Unhinged release date, the distributor made a smart decision and moved Unhinged to July 1st 2020. A Quiet Place 2 is a highly anticipated sequel which also earned overwhelmingly positive first reactions so Unhinged probably doesn’t have a chance against it.

July 1st 2020 is usually occupied by big Hollywood blockbusters. This is not the case this year as many studios postponed their movies. So Unhinged now has a good chance of success as it will not have strong competition and Solstice Studios can market it as the first new film to open in America’s movie theaters in Summer 2020. Also, as theaters were closed for months, the audience is hungry for new movies so now Unhinged has a bigger chance of success. To be honest Unhinged looks like a straight-to-VOD title and I was expecting a more grounded psychological thriller but judging by trailer this is more an action movie. I’m not optimistic but we’ll see.
