James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad (2021) Gets First Trailer
Warner Bros finally released the first trailer for the upcoming James Gunn soft reboot of The Suicide Squad (2021). To jog up your memory, the first Suicide Squad movie directed by David Ayer was panned by critics and received mixed reactions from fans at best. So after Ayer left the project director James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy, Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2, Slither) was hired back in 2018 to write and direct a sequel / soft reboot called The Suicide Squad.
Like we wrote in our previous article regarding The Suicide Squad, Gunn’s plans were to take the Suicide Squad in a brand new direction and the movie is supposed to be “a gritty 1970s war movie combined with the brilliance of James Gunn’s characters and comedy“. And that is now evident from the trailer – the tone in this one feels pretty different than the first one and a lot more fun.
To be perfectly honest I didn’t like the first Suicide Squad at all and while I wasn’t blown away with the trailer for this one, I still have confidence that James Gunn will deliver and do a much better job than David Ayer, director of the first one.
The Suicide Squad, directed by James Gunn and starring Idris Elba, Margot Robbie, John Cena, Joel Kinnaman, Jai Courtney, Michael Rooker, and Viola Davis among others, will be released both in theaters and WarnerMedia’s HBO Max streaming service on the same day, August 6, 2021.
