Months have passed after her daughter was found raped and murdered, so Mildred Hayes (McDormand), a divorced mother who lives with her son, unsatisfied by local authorities, challenges them by painting three signs leading into her town with a controversial message directed at the chief of police William Willoughby (Woody Harrelson).
Director Martin McDonagh started his film career with pretty good In Bruges and followed it a couple of years later with not so good Seven Psychopaths. So I was little worried that he’ll turn to be a one trick pony (like Richard Kelly, who after Donnie Darko hasn’t made good movie) but after seeing Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, I can say I was wrong as his last movie is probably his best yet proving that Seven Psychopaths was isolated case.
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri is a dark comedy/drama, similar to works of Coen brothers. It is well-shot and directed, I liked all the characters and I think that all actors did a pretty good job, especially Frances McDormand (Fargo, Burn After Reading, Moonrise Kingdom) and Sam Rockwell (Moon, Seven Psychopaths, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind) who are excellent and deserve awards recognition for their work here. My biggest complaint goes to the script. Don’t get me wrong, I think it is a well-written movie with some excellent dialogues but I don’t agree with nominations and awards regarding the script. You see, there are some plot holes and scenes that are just unconvincing but I can’t go into details without spoilers.
Nevertheless, it’s is an interesting and sometimes funny and unpredictable dark comedy/drama with excellent performances worth checking out. One of the best movies of 2017.
